Course Overview
WFALO is an online, self-directed course that presents current evidence and best practices for working with families, couples, and loved ones experiencing harms because of a loved one’s problem gambling. It provides an overview of these harms and addresses how professionals can support these individuals, including intervention strategies that professionals can use to help clients protect their finances, develop coping skills, repair relationships, and rebuild trust. This course is intended for mental health and addictions service providers. It will take approximately 3 hours to complete.
Learning Objectives
After successfully completing the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the impacts of problem gambling on families and affected loved ones;
- Recognize behaviour patterns within families that may enable gambling;
- Compare behaviour patterns within families that support harm reduction and/or stopping gambling;
- Identify steps to address suicide, intimate partner violence and financial crisis early in treatment; and,
- Appraise the therapeutic techniques presented within the course case studies.
Certification and Accreditation
This course has been accredited by the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation for 3.0 Continuing Education Units.
