What is H-CARDD?

The H-CARDD program was developed to address disparities in health status and health care access faced by individuals with developmental disabilities. Individuals with developmental disabilities often have complex health care needs, experience difficulty in accessing appropriate services, and tend to encounter health care providers with little knowledge of how to support them.

The overall goal of the H-CARDD program, led out of the Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre at CAMH, is to monitor and improve the health and health care of people with developmental disabilities through engagement with researchers, policy makers, health care planners, clinicians, adults with developmental disabilities, and caregivers.

Who are we?

Our team of scientists, clinicians, service providers, policy makers and people with developmental disabilities work together to improve the health and health care of adults with developmental disabilities. We have been studying the health and health care of over 66,000 adults with developmental disabilities since 2010.

In the health care resources section of this website you will find more tools and information for people with developmental disabilities and caregivers, as well as clinicians and service providers. These tools can help communicating important information in a health care setting. They also include information about health and developmental disabilities, and provide best practice tips for health care providers.
  

 

Get to Know Me Campaign

These posters were first developed as part of our effort to help hospitals become more comfortable supporting people with developmental disabilities. Staff in the hospitals thought they were helpful reminders about who the people were that they were supporting, but we also learned that people with disabilities liked seeing the posters when they went to health care settings. The Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre

The Azrieli Adult Neurodevelopmental Centre is the first research and education centre in Canada dedicated to improving care for adults with neurodevelopmental disabilities and mental health challenges.  The centre includes several scientists who work closely with trainees, patient and family advisors to study and develop ways to improve the mental health of this population. Scientists at the centre are running several research projects focused on mental health and disability.
