CAMH's Campbell Family Mental Health Research Symposium is an annual event featuring internationally renowned speakers presenting advances in mental illness and addictions.
Professor Robin Room leads The Centre for Alcohol Policy Research (CAPR) and has worked throughout his career in the alcohol and other drug research field. Professor Room is a sociologist who has directed alcohol and drug research centres in the United States, Canada and Sweden, and now in Australia, his native country.
He has been an advisor for the World Health Organization since 1975, and has received awards for scientific contributions in the USA, Sweden and Australia, the premier award in alcohol studies, the Jellinek Memorial Award for Alcohol Studies, as well as the prestigious 2012 Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Drug and Alcohol Endeavours.
Professor Room has worked on social, cultural and epidemiological studies of alcohol, drugs and gambling behaviour and problems, and studies of social responses to alcohol and drug problems and of the effects of policy changes. He has been part of many cross-national research projects, and is co-author of 30 books.
Room has been president of the international Kettil Bruun Society for Social and Epidemiological Research on Alcohol and in 2006-2012 of the Australian national peak organisation of nongovernmental organisations in the field, the Alcohol and Other Drugs Council of Australia (ADCA). He is Editor-in-Chief of Drug and Alcohol Review, an international, peer-reviewed journal.
