The CAMH Discovery Fund is dedicated to finding innovative solutions to solving major challenges in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental illness. Toward this end, the Discovery Fund supports promising, innovative projects through internal funding competitions. Our previous Seed Funding Competition and current Accelerator Competition are geared towards supporting high-risk/high-reward research, providing CAMH researchers with the opportunity to pursue their most innovative research ideas.
The Discovery Fund also provides funding to support new investigators and trainees (selected through a rigorous Talent Development competition), offers matching funds for external competitive funding opportunities, and continually makes strategic investments in transformative research ideas in key priority areas.
By enabling investigator success and providing opportunities for internal and external collaborations, as well as the pursuit of peer-reviewed funding, CAMH is investing not only in its people, but in the very future of mental health.

This funding allows for the study of the underlying mechanisms associated with depression, and the identification of new targets for the development of more effective antidepressant treatments.
Alex Abramovich, Scientist, Institute for Mental Health Policy Research
In this study, we found that transgender individuals in Ontario are more likely to live in lower income neighborhoods, experience chronic health conditions, and have higher use of health services compared to the general population. This demonstrates the need to provide inclusive health care by providers who are knowledgeable about transgender issues, and the need to improve our ability to identify transgender individuals in administrative health data, so that we can better understand the factors underlying the high rates of disease burden.
