Dr. Abigail Ortiz is a scientist in the General Adult Psychiatry and Health Systems Division at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Dr. Ortiz is also the lead for the Bipolar Disorder Integrated Care Pathways at CAMH.
Dr. Ortiz was born in Mexico and has a Mestizo heritage. She completed her medical degree in Mexico and her postgraduate studies at McGill University and Dalhousie University, with a focus on bipolar disorder. She has been the recipient of more than 15 awards in her career, including the Samuel Gershon Award by the International Society of Bipolar Disorders, the Academic Scholar Awards by the University of Toronto, and the Junior Clinical Research Chair in Mood Disorders by the University of Ottawa.
Areas of Research
Dr. Ortiz’ research focuses on patients with mood disorders, particularly those with bipolar disorder. The overarching goal of her career is to address a problem in Psychiatry that has been intractable to date: making actionable clinical predictions for individual patients. For her research, Dr. Ortiz uses wearable devices and new analytical approaches based on tools from mathematics and physics (nonlinear techniques) to understand mood regulation and to forecast episodes of illness. Dr. Ortiz research has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
