Dr. Michael Roerecke is a scientist with the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and is part of the World Health Organization/Pan-American Health Organization (WHO/PAHO) Collaborating Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. Dr. Roerecke is also an assistant professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health in the Division of Epidemiology at the University of Toronto.
Dr. Roerecke has a PhD in epidemiology and addiction studies from the University of Toronto. He has been listed among the top 1% most highly cited researchers worldwide in the crossfield category by Clarivate Analytics annually since 2019.
Areas of Research
Through systematic reviews and meta-analyses, Dr. Roerecke's research aims at synthesizing the evidence for the relationships between substance use and misuse and associated harms, with a focus on the health and treatment impacts of multiple dimensions of alcohol consumption (including drinking patterns and alcohol use disorders). These health outcomes include several chronic diseases, such as type II diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, pancreatitis, and liver diseases, and also mental health outcomes, such as depression and suicide.
His work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIAAA) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
